Green architecture – 2002 Alpine luxury eco-house
Although we already wrote a few articles where we described luxurious and eco-friendly architecture, in this article we’re going to write about 2002 Alpine – a hyper eco-luxury urban home. 2002 Alpine is the United States’ first ever American-designed, German engineered home in the US. Located in the heart of Boulder, Colorado, this residence represents a break in tradition with nearly every convention in contemporary homebuilding.
The three-story home with a garage and rooftop terrace, which covers almost 480 square meters (5,160 square feet) on a hillside in the heart of Boulder, was built in a collaboration between Boulder-based architects Studio H:T and builders Vireo and WeberHaus, who engineered the home using wood from consciously-managed 300-year-old forests at a factory whose precision processes and climate control are overseen by Porsche.
The 9 kW solar array creates almost enough energy to make this a passive house, since this home uses additional 18% of the average home’s energy from the grid. Considering this is a large luxury home with an elevator up from the garage, it is green compared to other similar luxury homes.
Dual-coated double-pane windows roll open on aerospace grade ball bearings and nautical grade stainless steel to last century and reflect back 92% of the energy on both sides, keeping out the warm Sun’s rays in the summer and keeping the warmed air in the winter.
The manufacturing partner, WeberHaus, uses a CAD-CAM process to minimize waste from construction. In the end, construction created only 2% waste. It has a gray water treatment system, entirely non-toxic hyper-allergenic interior with radiant heat and energy-efficient high-end fixtures.
“2002 Alpine isn’t just a home with cutting-edge CAD-CAM construction and hyper-precision (1/2’’ over a 100-foot span)”, said David Scott of Colorado Landmark Realtors, who listed the property at $3.5 million. “It doesn’t just offer more performance per square foot than any home I’ve ever seen. It’s a new icon for Boulder and it’s ushering in a new way of life. Ecoluxury has truly arrived in the United States.”
